Berrima round about

This is actually being posted a day late, so it is actually reflections of February 11, 2011.

We had a gentle start to the day - sitting on the deck I relaxed with my crocheting while I had my coffee. As you can see Christian volunteered to "untangle" my yarn for me. He also wanted to help me actually crochet but I managed to deter him from this idea (not an easy feat to change his mind).

Well the local economy certainly was not suffering in Berrima today. Jess, Judd and family took us to visit this quaint little town, which sports a number of little trinket and home made jams/preserves shops. One of the favourites was the candy shop. It had something for each one of us. After perusing a few more shops we stopped for lunch in the pub. We were tempted to explore the secret garden behind the pub at which we had lunch, but refrained as it appeared to be the back of someone's property.

It also boasts a gaol built between 1835 and 1838. In 1916 this penitentiary was used by the army as a German Prisoner Internment camp. The gaol still functions as a medium security correctional center today, having 60-70 residents.

The Berrima Courthouse sits right beside the gaol and functions as a museum. We were honored to witness the trial of one Jessica Smith, charged with the crime of being in possession of Canadian contraband. Apparently, if convicted to execution she would be buried standing up because the executed criminals were not permitted to ever rest in peace.

A Bull's Head fountain decorates the exterior wall of the penitentiary, directing runoff water to a horse trough.

Berrima is known as one of the coolest, as in temperature, locations in the area and most winters is even known to have a dusting of snow in the winter months.

The walk back to the car entailed stopping at one or two more shops to relieve our purses of a little weight.

I also discovered at this point that Australia also has some of the liquid sunshine that falls from the sky. Jess and Hannah had to take cover.

We returned home weary from our adventures, only having enough energy left to meet with Karl and have some lively conversation around the table.
